Mangaluru: Emphasising the role of journalism in maintaining a healthy and informed society, Legislative Council member Ivan D’Souza said that governments have a responsibility to protect journalists who perform their duties with honesty and integrity. He was speaking after inaugurating the Mangalore Press Club Day celebrations held on Sunday at the Prerana Hall of the Red Cross Centenary Building.
He observed that journalists act as one of the strongest pillars in ensuring that society receives factual and balanced information. According to him, responsible journalism helps prevent misinformation and supports social harmony. Addressing journalists and guests during the event, he appreciated the dedication shown by media professionals who often reach incident locations quickly and report developments with care and responsibility.
Journalists praised for commitment and social responsibility
During his address, Ivan D’Souza highlighted the important work undertaken by journalists in difficult and demanding situations. He noted that media professionals frequently arrive at incident sites with the same urgency as law enforcement authorities and carry the responsibility of presenting facts carefully to the public.
He appreciated the discretion exercised by journalists while reporting sensitive incidents and said such responsible reporting prevents confusion and discourages the spread of misleading information. He stated that ethical journalism contributes significantly to the well-being of society and plays a role in safeguarding democratic values.
The event also recognised the efforts of media personnel and community contributors who have made meaningful contributions in their respective fields.
Press Club Award presented to social worker
One of the highlights of the celebration was the presentation of the 2016 Mangalore Press Club Award to social worker Deepak G. Belthangady, founder of Rajakesari Trust.
The award was presented by H.N. Mithun, who praised journalists in the region for their balanced and socially responsible work. He said media professionals in the city have consistently demonstrated restraint while reporting and have maintained concern for societal welfare.
He further stated that honouring individuals who work selflessly sends a constructive message to society and encourages more people to engage in meaningful service.
Senior journalists and award winners felicitated
Several senior journalists and distinguished personalities were honoured during the programme for their contribution to journalism and society.
Senior journalists Balasubrahmanya Kayyar, Ramanna Y., Harsha, Raymond D’Cunha and R.M. Rajendran were felicitated with the Press Honour Award by Ivan D’Souza and senior assistant director of the Department of Information B.A. Khader Shah.
The programme also honoured Media Academy Special Award winner Anand Shetty. Recipients of KUWJ awards, district Rajyotsava awards and Kannada literary honours were also recognised during the event for their achievements and service.
Chairman of the Dakshina Kannada District Unit of the Red Cross Society CA Shantharam Shetty distributed merit awards to children of journalists, acknowledging academic achievements and encouraging educational excellence.
Press Club office-bearers attend programme
The programme was presided over by P.B. Harish Rai. Among those present were Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Association president Pushparaj B.N., general secretary Rajesh K. Poojary, Press Bhavan Trust president Annu Mangaluru and state executive committee member Srinivas Nayak Indaje.
Press Club vice-president Mohammed Arif Padubidri, treasurer Vijay Kotyan Padu and executive committee members introduced the award recipients and honourees during the ceremony. General secretary Ibrahim Adkasthala delivered the vote of thanks, while Lokesh Rai compered the programme.
The event served as an occasion to recognise the efforts of journalists and social contributors while reinforcing the significance of responsible journalism in strengthening society and preserving public trust.
