Mangaluru – It’s been over three weeks since vendors moved into the new, modern Kadri Market building in Mallikatte. However, the earlier temporary market structure still remains untouched, with no signs of dismantling work starting.
Despite prior assurances from Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) about immediate demolition, no action has followed. Local residents are now voicing concerns that the abandoned space may soon turn into a hideout for vagrants. Some individuals have already been spotted using the rundown structure as shelter, especially now with the rainy season providing more incentive for such use.
During the vendor relocation, officials had promised that the old building would be removed within 48 hours. But even after 21 days, no progress is visible. MCC had also mentioned plans to convert the site into a bus bay or a parking lot. However, these proposals remain on paper, with no development on the ground.
Constructed nearly seven years ago as a stopgap arrangement, the temporary market is now in a poor state. Locals worry it may collapse if left unattended and are questioning who will be held liable if an accident occurs.
Ongoing Traffic Woes
Previously, when the market operated from this spot, customers parked haphazardly along the roadside, creating traffic congestion. Even now, many continue parking near the abandoned building instead of using designated areas near the new market across the road, causing persistent traffic headaches.
