Sullia: A 60-year-old woman who was critically injured after being knocked down by a goods vehicle near Kanakamajalu in Dakshina Kannada died while undergoing treatment at the district hospital in Mangaluru on Saturday, October 3.
The deceased has been identified as Padmavathi, 60, a resident of Moorje in Kanakamajalu.
The accident took place on September 30 when Padmavathi had gone to a shop in Kanakamajalu town. She was standing by the roadside in the evening and waiting to cross the road when the accident occurred.
Goods vehicle hits pedestrian
According to the information available, a goods vehicle travelling from Puttur towards Sullia struck Padmavathi while she was standing by the roadside.
The impact reportedly threw her onto the road, leaving her with severe injuries to the back of her head and other parts of her body.
People in the vicinity immediately came to her aid and shifted her to the Sullia government hospital.
After receiving preliminary treatment at the hospital, Padmavathi was shifted to the district hospital in Mangaluru for advanced medical care due to the severity of her injuries.
Despite treatment, her condition remained critical.
Woman dies during treatment
Padmavathi reportedly failed to respond to treatment and succumbed to her injuries at the Mangaluru district hospital on Saturday.
Her death has turned the September 30 road accident into a fatal accident case.
The incident has caused concern among residents in the Kanakamajalu area, particularly over pedestrian safety along the road where people frequently cross and walk beside the carriageway.
Case registered against driver
Sullia police have registered a case against the goods vehicle driver, identified as Mahabala Poojary, in connection with the accident.
Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the collision and the subsequent death of Padmavathi.
