Mangaluru: The Karnataka government will hold a special Cabinet meeting in Mangaluru on September 18, with a focus on the development needs of the coastal districts, particularly the Tulu Nadu region.
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced the meeting through a video message posted on X, saying the government intended to use the occasion to address the long-standing aspirations and requirements of people in the coastal region.
Shivakumar announces special Cabinet meeting
In his video message, Shivakumar said the government had decided to organise the special Cabinet meeting in the coastal city to understand the region’s needs more closely and take decisions based on local requirements.
“We have organised a special Cabinet meeting in the coastal city of Mangaluru on September 18 to fulfil the long-standing aspirations of the people of the coastal region,” Shivakumar said.
The meeting is expected to bring the state government’s senior leadership together in Mangaluru to deliberate on development-related issues concerning the coastal districts.
The move comes amid demands from various sections for greater government attention to infrastructure, employment, tourism, fisheries, education, healthcare and other sectors in coastal Karnataka.
Focus on comprehensive coastal development
According to Shivakumar, the government plans to give a fresh impetus to the comprehensive development of the coastal region.
He identified ports, infrastructure, fisheries and industries among the key sectors that would receive attention.
The Deputy Chief Minister said the government wanted to understand the problems and requirements of people in the region at close quarters. He added that decisions could be taken on the spot based on the needs identified locally.
The coastal districts have a significant presence of ports, fishing communities, industries and agricultural activities, making infrastructure and economic development important components of the region’s development agenda.
Major projects may come up for approval
Several major projects and development-related decisions concerning the coastal districts are expected to come up before the Cabinet during the special meeting.
The government has not, however, provided a complete list of the proposals that will be placed before the Cabinet.

Shivakumar also used Tulu at the conclusion of his video message, greeting people of the coastal region with the words “Maateregla Solmelu”, meaning greetings to everyone.
The use of Tulu in the message comes as the language remains an important cultural and linguistic issue in coastal Karnataka, where it is widely spoken.
The coastal region, particularly the areas historically associated with Tulu Nadu, has seen longstanding demands for greater recognition and promotion of Tulu and its cultural heritage.
