Mangaluru: The Department of Paediatrics at KMC Hospital Attavar, in collaboration with Land Trades Builders & Developers, organised a meaningful programme to observe International Childhood Cancer Day under the theme “Demonstrating Impact: From Challenge to Change.” The event brought together healthcare professionals, young cancer warriors, families and distinguished guests to raise awareness and celebrate resilience.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr Harsha Prasada L, Consultant Paediatric Haematologist and Oncologist, who highlighted the hospital’s commitment to comprehensive paediatric cancer care. He stressed the importance of early diagnosis, timely intervention and multidisciplinary management in improving survival outcomes among children diagnosed with cancer.

Inspiring voices and shared courage

Chief Guest Ms Remona Evette Pereira, a Golden Book of World Records holder and renowned Bharatanatyam dancer, delivered an emotional and motivational address. Recalling her association with KMC Hospital, she described the institution as a pillar of support during her record-setting performance. She encouraged the young patients to pursue their dreams with determination and courage, regardless of the obstacles they face.

Joining her as Chief Guest, Shri Vismaya Vinayak, a multi-talented artist and Tulu film actor, energised the gathering with words of encouragement. He urged the children to remain hopeful and positive during their treatment journeys. His lively mimicry performance brought laughter and joy to the hall, offering a welcome moment of relief and entertainment.

Medical leadership and commitment to care

Dr B Unnikrishnan, Dean of KMC Mangaluru, attended as Guest of Honour. In his address, he highlighted KMC Hospital’s dedicated efforts in combating paediatric malignancies and noted an encouraging 80 per cent success rate in curing childhood cancers at the institution. He emphasised that advancements in treatment protocols, improved supportive care and coordinated teamwork have significantly enhanced survival and quality of life for young patients.

Also present on the dais were Dr Sudhakar Kantipudi, Chief Operating Officer, Teaching Hospitals, MAHE, and Dr Deepak Madi, Deputy Medical Superintendent, KMC Hospital Attavar. Their presence underscored the institution’s administrative and academic support for specialised paediatric oncology services.

The formal proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Sucheta Rao, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, who expressed gratitude to the chief guests, medical teams, partner organisations and volunteers for their continued support in strengthening paediatric cancer care and patient outreach initiatives.

The event was compered by Dr Divya and Dr Aditi, who guided the programme smoothly and engaged the audience throughout.
