KMC Hospital Attavar, in partnership with Land Trades Builders and Developers, marked International Childhood Cancer Day by awarding scholarships to 42 children fighting or surviving cancer. The initiative, part of Land Trades’ ‘Vidya Sankalp’ CSR programme, aims to support the education of these young survivors.

Scholarships empower cancer-affected children

The scholarships, covering educational expenses until graduation, were distributed on Friday, February 14, during a programme organised by the Department of Paediatrics at KMC Hospital Attavar. The initiative seeks to ensure that the children’s educational journeys are not hindered by their medical struggles.

Present at the event were Shrinath Hebbar, proprietor of Land Trades, and the company’s brand ambassador, actor Roopesh Shetty. Capt. Brijesh Chowta, Member of Parliament, also attended as the chief guest.

Other dignitaries included:

  • Dr. Dilip G. Naik, Pro Vice Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE)
  • Dr. Anand Venugopal, COO of Teaching Hospitals, MAHE Manipal
  • Dr. Chakrapani M, Medical Superintendent, KMC Hospital Attavar
  • Dr. Harsha Prasad L, Consultant Paediatric Haematologist and Oncologist
  • Dr. Suchetha Rao, Head of the Department of Paediatrics

Words of encouragement for young survivors

Shrinath Hebbar praised the children’s resilience and encouraged them to excel. He highlighted the importance of raising awareness and making quality cancer treatment affordable.

Roopesh Shetty emphasised that a positive attitude and confidence are crucial in overcoming cancer. He engaged the children in a lively session of selfies, singing, and dancing.

MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta commended childhood cancer survivors as symbols of courage. He stressed the need for societal and governmental support to help families cope with the disease.

Cancer statistics and treatment challenges

Dr. Harsha Prasad L shared sobering facts: globally, nearly 4 lakh children are diagnosed with cancer annually, with India accounting for about 50,000 cases. While developed countries see an 80% cure rate, India’s ranges from 50% to 60% due to funding shortages and inadequate support systems.

Dr. Prasad stressed that KMC Hospital operates under the belief that no child should be denied treatment due to financial constraints. Despite government schemes, funding gaps often require assistance from donors, NGOs, and charities.

Several individuals and organisations were recognised for their support:

  • Rita Noronha (CEDSE)
  • Herald Morris
  • Sabitha Shetty (Lions Club)
