Mangaluru, February 7, 2026: KMC Hospital Mangaluru successfully concluded “Let’s AVOID Cancer,” an awareness programme organised by the Comprehensive Cancer Care Team on February 7, 2026, at KMC Hospital, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Circle, Mangaluru. The programme aimed to raise awareness about cancer risk factors, early warning signs, and the importance of prevention and timely screening among the general public.
The interactive session addressed everyday lifestyle exposures and habits that often go unnoticed, including passive smoking, excessive consumption of processed foods, unsafe food storage practices, prolonged exposure to plastics, and the need to recognise early symptoms such as unexplained bleeding or persistent changes in health. The programme also highlighted the role of lifestyle, environmental and hereditary factors in cancer risk and the importance of seeking medical advice without delay. More than 120 public gathered for this program from association like Roatary Club Hill side, Lions Club Kadri, St Aloysius, Athena, NSS Teams, LIC India participated in this program.
The expert panel discussion led by Dr. Prashantha B, Consultant – Hemato Oncology, who spoke on blood-related cancers and the importance of recognising early warning signs such has iron deficiency and low hb levels; Dr. Sanyo P Dsouza, Consultant – Medical Oncology, who discussed lifestyle-linked cancers, risk reduction, and the role of early diagnosis; Dr. Basila Ameer Ali, Consultant – Breast Surgery, who focused on breast cancer awareness, self-examination, and screening; Dr. Karthik K S, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, who explained the role of surgery and the benefits of early-stage cancer detection; and Dr. Harsha Prasad L, Consultant – Pediatric Hemato Oncology, who highlighted cancers in children, early symptoms parents should watch for, and the importance of timely treatment.
Speaking during the programme, Dr. Sanyo P Dsouza, Consultant – Medical Oncology said, “Many cancers are linked to everyday habits and delayed consultation. Awareness, lifestyle modification, and early screening can significantly reduce cancer burden and improve survival.”
Emphasising pediatric cancer awareness, Dr. Harsha Prasad L, Consultant – Pediatric Hemato Oncology noted, “Cancer in children is often highly curable when detected early. Parents should not ignore persistent symptoms even situations such as back pain, bony pain, child waking up night and should seek medical evaluation without delay.”
Dr. Basila Ameer Ali, Breast Cancer Consultant stated that “Breast cancer can be easily detected by looking of lumps in the breast or armpit area. 1% of male population are also prone to breast cancer.”
Dr Karthik K S, Surgical Oncologist urged people to not wait for pain or major signals and hence waste time in getting the treatment at the right time. Cancer can present in many ways, right and early evaluation and treatment can help avoid complication.”
Speaking on the initiative, Dr. Prashantha B, Consultant – Hemato Oncology said, “Cancer prevention begins with awareness and informed choices. Avoiding tobacco and alcohol consumption, eating adequate fruits and vegetables daily, limiting radiation / sun exposure and choosing healthy food and habits reduces cancer risk by 30-40%.”
The programme witnessed active participation from senior citizens, parents, teachers, health advisors, social workers, and members of the general public, reflecting the growing need for accessible and credible cancer awareness initiatives at the community level.
