Mangaluru: KMC Hospital Mangaluru has announced a comprehensive public awareness initiative titled ‘Let’s AVOID Cancer’, aimed at educating the community on lifestyle-related cancer risks and preventive practices. The programme will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, starting at 4.00 pm, at the hospital premises near Dr B R Ambedkar Circle.
Focus on prevention through lifestyle awareness
The initiative is being organised by the hospital’s Comprehensive Cancer Care Team as a proactive response to the rising incidence of lifestyle-related cancers. The programme seeks to address everyday habits and exposures that are often ignored but may significantly increase cancer risk over time.
Through expert-led discussions, the session will examine practical and relevant questions, including smartphone usage in bedrooms, potential health risks linked to microwaves, non-stick cookware and air fryers, and concerns surrounding the consumption of hot food in plastic containers and water stored in plastic bottles. The programme will also highlight the dangers associated with passive smoking, frequent intake of processed foods and aerated drinks, and prolonged use of cosmetics such as nail polish and lipsticks.
Interaction with a multidisciplinary expert panel
Participants will have the opportunity to interact directly with a multidisciplinary panel of cancer care specialists. The expert panel will include a haemato-oncologist, breast specialist, surgical oncologist, medical oncologist, and a child cancer specialist. These interactions are designed to provide evidence-based clarity, dispel common myths, and empower individuals to make informed lifestyle choices that can reduce cancer risk.
Who should attend
The programme is open to a wide cross-section of the public. It is particularly relevant for young people who regularly use smartphones and consume packaged or fast food, senior citizens, and individuals with a family history of cancer. Educators, parents, health advisors, and social workers are also encouraged to attend, as they play a crucial role in disseminating preventive health information within families and communities.
By targeting both individuals and influencers within society, the initiative aims to create a ripple effect of awareness that extends beyond the event itself.

The programme will be held at the Ground Floor, Tower 2, KMC Hospital Mangaluru, Dr B R Ambedkar Circle. Participation is free of charge, but prior registration is mandatory due to limited seating.
