Mangaluru: A recent survey under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) revealed that 139 members of the Koraga community in Dakshina Kannada still lack accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY). Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat CEO Anandh K shared these findings during a banking development review meeting organized by Canara Bank on Thursday.

Anandh emphasized that mere organization of camps is insufficient; banks must actively raise awareness about the importance of PMJJBY accounts, especially for the Koraga community, classified as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG). He stressed the need for annual renewal of the scheme, which provides inclusive and renewable life insurance.

RBI AGM Aravind advised banks to send SMS alerts regarding account balances to enhance participation and retention. Dakshina Kannada district currently ranks 28th out of 31 districts in PMJJBY performance, highlighting the need for improvement.

The Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) plans to distribute pamphlets at Koraga households before organizing enrolment drives. During the meeting, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of data on PM Vishwakarma scheme beneficiaries, directing officials to convene a dedicated meeting on the issue.

As of September 30, 2024, Dakshina Kannada’s total banking business reached ₹1,25,040.24 crore, reflecting an 11.9% year-on-year growth. Deposits grew by 10.2% to ₹72,628.7 crore, and advances rose by 14.3% to ₹52,411.6 crore, with a credit-deposit ratio of 72.2%.
