Bantwal: A major accident was narrowly averted on Wednesday morning after a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus travelling from Alike towards Vittal, Puttur and Uppinangady lost control and veered off the road near Ukkuda-Apperipade. The incident occurred during the busy morning hours when the bus was carrying a large number of school and college students, raising concerns among commuters and local residents.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the vehicle avoided overturning after its wheels became lodged in the muddy roadside terrain. The timely halt prevented what could have turned into a serious road accident involving dozens of passengers.
Bus loses control during morning commute
According to reports, the KSRTC bus was travelling along its regular route when it suddenly went out of the driver’s control between Ukkuda and Apperipade near Vittal. Witnesses and local sources indicated that the bus was moving at a relatively high speed at the time of the incident.
As the driver struggled to regain control, the vehicle drifted towards the edge of the road, creating panic among passengers. Since the bus was crowded with students travelling to schools and colleges, the situation briefly raised fears of a major mishap.
However, instead of overturning or crashing into nearby structures, the bus came to a stop after its wheels sank into the muddy roadside surface. The soft ground effectively prevented the vehicle from rolling further and helped avert a potentially dangerous situation.
Students escape unharmed
The incident occurred during peak morning commuting hours, when public transport services witness heavy passenger movement. A significant number of students were onboard, making the safe outcome a major relief for parents, educational institutions and transport authorities.
Passengers reportedly remained inside the vehicle until the situation stabilised. Local residents and passing motorists also gathered at the scene after noticing the bus stranded near the roadside.
No injuries were reported among the passengers or the bus crew. The absence of casualties has been attributed to the vehicle coming to a halt before overturning and the quick response of those present at the location.
Roadside conditions under scrutiny
The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding roadside safety and terrain conditions along certain stretches of rural roads. With the monsoon season approaching and intermittent rainfall affecting road surfaces, muddy shoulders and weakened roadside sections can pose risks to vehicles, especially large passenger buses.
Motorists travelling through the area have been advised to exercise caution and maintain safe speeds while navigating roads that may become slippery or unstable during adverse weather conditions.
Road safety experts often stress the importance of defensive driving, regular vehicle maintenance and adherence to speed limits, particularly on routes frequently used by public transport vehicles carrying students and daily commuters.
Authorities expected to assess cause
Transport and local authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine the factors that contributed to the loss of control. Investigators may assess road conditions, weather-related factors and the operational condition of the vehicle as part of the review.
While preliminary reports suggest that the bus veered off the road after going out of control, officials are likely to gather additional information before arriving at any conclusions regarding the exact cause of the incident.
The event serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety measures and cautious driving, especially on routes carrying large numbers of passengers. Although the bus sustained a scare and passengers experienced moments of anxiety, the absence of injuries ensured that the incident ended without tragedy.
