Mangaluru: A Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus conductor has been accused of sexually harassing a young female passenger, prompting immediate intervention from the state government. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, taking serious note of the episode, ordered a thorough probe and instructed officials to remove the conductor from service without delay.
Acting on a complaint lodged by a social activist, Konaje police took the accused—35-year-old Pradeep Naikar from Bagalkot—into custody. KSRTC swiftly issued a suspension order following the complaint.
The disturbing event took place on April 22 on a KSRTC bus operating on the Mudipu–State Bank route. Two women were seated in the section designated for female passengers. One of them had dozed off during the trip, when the conductor allegedly approached and acted in a sexually inappropriate manner. A fellow passenger seated near the driver recorded the incident on their mobile phone.
The video quickly circulated on social media, sparking widespread public outrage. Online users condemned the conductor’s conduct and demanded immediate disciplinary action. In response, KSRTC suspended the staff member and initiated internal proceedings.
Minister Reddy termed the incident “shameful and inexcusable,” stressing that women commuters deserve respect and security. He emphasized that the misconduct of a few taints the reputation of the entire corporation. He directed KSRTC’s managing director to initiate a detailed inquiry and ensure prompt punitive measures.
Mangaluru police commissioner Anupam Agrawal confirmed an FIR under Sections 74 and 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been filed against the accused.
