Mangaluru: Marking International Workers’ Day, members of the Port Workers’ Union gathered at the old port workers’ area in Bundar, Mangaluru, on May 1, 2026, to celebrate May Day and highlight pressing concerns related to labour rights and welfare.

Addressing the gathering, union president B.K. Imtiyaz emphasised the indispensable role of labourers in driving societal progress. “The world has grown and progressed through the hard work of labourers. Without them, the wheel of society cannot move,” he said, underscoring the contributions of workers across sectors.

Concerns over labour rights and policies

Imtiyaz raised concerns over what he described as a growing tilt of government policies in favour of corporate entities. He alleged that such policies are leading to the dilution of labour protections and weakening of existing labour laws, which he said could adversely affect workers’ security and livelihoods.

He stressed that the current scenario demands unity among workers. According to him, only collective action and solidarity can ensure that labour rights are protected and strengthened. “Unless workers unite and fight collectively, their rights cannot be secured,” he stated, urging attendees to remain organised and vigilant.

Flag hoisting and participation

As part of the celebrations, senior union member Majeed Ullalbaail hoisted the union flag, symbolising solidarity and the enduring spirit of the labour movement. The event witnessed participation from several members of the Port Workers’ Union and local workers.

Prominent attendees included Mohan Kumpala, Siddiq Bengre, Shameer Boliyar, Lokesh Shetty, Harish Kerebail, Rafiq, Abbas M.R., and M.D. Jasim, among others. The gathering provided a platform for workers to discuss challenges and reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding their rights.

Significance of May Day

May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is observed globally on May 1 to honour the contributions of workers and to advocate for fair labour practices. In India, the day holds particular significance as labour unions and organisations use the occasion to highlight issues such as wages, working conditions, job security, and social protection.

Events like the one held in Mangaluru serve as reminders of the ongoing struggles faced by workers in various sectors, including port and logistics services, which play a vital role in the region’s economy.

Call for collective action

Speakers at the event reiterated that unity among workers is essential to address emerging challenges in a rapidly changing economic landscape. They called for stronger organisation within unions and active participation in movements aimed at protecting labour rights.

The programme concluded with a renewed pledge by union members to work collectively towards ensuring dignity, fair treatment, and equitable opportunities for all workers.

Conclusion

The May Day celebration in Mangaluru not only honoured the contributions of labourers but also brought attention to critical issues affecting the workforce. With calls for unity and vigilance, union leaders emphasised the need for continued efforts to safeguard workers’ rights in the face of evolving economic and policy challenges.
