Mangaluru: A one-day training programme on ‘Leadership in Local Governance’ was organised at Mother Teresa Hall, CODP Mangaluru, on August 25 under the Women Empowerment Project in collaboration with CODP Mangaluru and CROSS, Bengaluru.
The programme focused on strengthening women’s understanding of local governance, improving leadership abilities and creating greater awareness about the Panchayat Raj system.
Representatives from CODP-promoted Sanghas, Mahasanghas and Federations actively participated in the training programme.
Focus on women’s role in governance
Durgadas Shetty was the resource person for the training and spoke in detail about the important role women can play in local governance.
He explained various aspects of leadership skills and encouraged the participants to take an active role in decision-making processes at the grassroots level.
The session also focused on the Panchayat Raj system and its significance in strengthening democratic governance at the local level. Participants were given an opportunity to understand the structure and functioning of local self-government institutions and the role of elected representatives.
The training sought to equip women with knowledge and confidence to participate more effectively in community development and local governance activities.
Representatives actively participate
Women representatives from CODP-promoted Sanghas, Mahasanghas and Federations took an active part in the programme.
The participation of members from various community-based groups provided a platform for discussions on women’s leadership, grassroots participation and the challenges involved in taking up responsibilities in local governance.
The programme emphasised the need for greater participation of women in public decision-making and local self-government institutions.
Through such training initiatives, women can gain a better understanding of their rights, responsibilities and opportunities to contribute to the development of their communities.

Jayashree, president of Samruddhi District Women Federation, Mangaluru, was present as a guest.
Supriya M A, project coordinator, along with members of the CODP staff, also attended the programme.
The organisers highlighted the importance of leadership development among women and the need to create opportunities for their meaningful participation in local governance.
The one-day programme concluded with participants gaining insights into leadership, the Panchayat Raj system and their potential role in strengthening grassroots democracy and community development.
