Sullia: Police have taken a man into custody after he allegedly stabbed his wife and mother-in-law at Anavugundi near Kanavu in Peruvaje village on Sunday afternoon and fled into a nearby forest.
The accused has been identified as Ganesh, a resident of Anavugundi. His wife Vinutha and mother-in-law Kusuma suffered serious injuries in the alleged attack and were shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru for treatment.
Attack reportedly occurred while family was leaving
According to preliminary information, Ganesh had reportedly been staying mostly at his wife’s house. On September 6, he is said to have travelled to his house at Anavugundi along with Vinutha and some relatives from Bellare in an auto.
The group reportedly spent around half an hour at the house. Ganesh, Vinutha, Kusuma, their son and other relatives then began returning to Vinutha’s house.
The alleged attack took place after they reached the road near the house. Ganesh reportedly attempted to stab Vinutha with a knife.
Kusuma is said to have intervened in an attempt to protect her daughter. She allegedly sustained serious injuries during the incident. Vinutha was also stabbed and suffered injuries.
The sudden attack reportedly frightened the other family members. Ganesh’s son and other relatives fled from the spot, according to preliminary information.
Accused allegedly fled into forest
After the alleged assault, Ganesh reportedly escaped towards a forested area near his house.
Information about the incident was subsequently conveyed to the police. Bellare police launched a search operation to trace the accused, who was believed to have taken shelter in the nearby forest.
Police personnel continued searching the area through the evening. Ganesh was eventually located in the forest and taken into custody.
The injured women were admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru, where they are undergoing treatment.
Motive yet to be established
The exact circumstances and motive behind the alleged attack have not yet been established. Police are investigating the events that preceded the incident and the circumstances that led to the alleged stabbing.
Bellare police are continuing their investigation to establish the sequence of events and ascertain the reason for the attack. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
