Beltangady: Dharmasthala police arrested a 34-year-old man and seized a pick-up vehicle for allegedly transporting a bovine illegally near the Manjushree bus stand at Somanthadka on the night of June 3.

According to police, the action was taken following credible information received by Dharmasthala police. Police Sub-Inspector Samarth R. Ganiger, along with his team, intercepted a pick-up vehicle near the bus stand and conducted an inspection.

During the inspection, officers found a bovine being transported without the necessary permits and documents required under the law. The vehicle was immediately detained, and the animal was rescued.

Accused arrested during operation

The arrested accused has been identified as Anil P. (34), a resident of Thotathadi in Beltangady. Following his detention, police questioned him regarding the transportation of the animal.

During interrogation, Anil reportedly confessed that he had purchased the bovine from Raghavendra Bhat (45). Police said he disclosed that the animal was allegedly being transported with the intention of slaughter.

Investigators further learned that Anil was allegedly acting in coordination with two other individuals identified as Thomas (30), a resident of Thotathadi, and Kabir (28), a resident of Kakkinje.

Vehicle seized and case registered

As part of the operation, police seized the pick-up vehicle used for transporting the animal. The bovine was also taken into custody as evidence in the case.

A case has been registered at Dharmasthala Police Station under Sections 5, 7 and 12 of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020.

Police officials said the provisions deal with restrictions on cattle slaughter, transportation and related offences under the Act.

Investigation continues

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the involvement of the other individuals named during the interrogation. Police are also examining the circumstances surrounding the purchase and transportation of the bovine.

Officials stated that further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. The seized vehicle and other evidence will form part of the ongoing probe.

The operation highlights continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb illegal cattle transportation and ensure compliance with the provisions of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020.
