Sullia: Bellare police have arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with the alleged theft of clothes from the Bellare Government Girls’ Hostel.
The complainant in the case is the warden of the government girls’ hostel. The incident came to light on the morning of September 2, when students noticed that clothes they had put out to dry were missing.
The students informed the warden about the missing clothes, following which she checked the CCTV footage installed at the hostel premises.
CCTV captures alleged theft
According to the complaint, the CCTV footage showed an unidentified youth allegedly entering the hostel premises in the early hours of September 2.
The footage reportedly showed the person trespassing into the hostel and taking away some of the clothes that had been put out by the students to dry.
Following the incident, the warden approached Bellare police and lodged a complaint on September 5.
Based on the complaint, Bellare police registered a case as Crime No. 54/2026 under Sections 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Accused arrested during investigation
Police launched an investigation into the case and worked to identify the person seen in the CCTV footage.
During the course of the investigation, police arrested K Ramachandra, 35, a resident of Kolthige in Puttur, on September 7.
The arrest was made based on the investigation into the alleged theft at the hostel.
Following his arrest, Ramachandra was produced before the jurisdictional court.
Court remands accused to judicial custody
The jurisdictional court subsequently remanded the accused to judicial custody until September 15.
Bellare police are continuing further investigation into the case. The CCTV footage and other available evidence are expected to form part of the investigation into the alleged trespassing and theft at the government hostel.
The incident has also highlighted the importance of security measures at residential hostels, particularly those accommodating students, and the role of CCTV surveillance in investigating incidents occurring on hostel premises.
