Mangaluru: A man has been arrested for allegedly throwing a packet containing ganja into the premises of the District Jail in Mangaluru. The accused was chased for nearly 500 metres and apprehended by Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF) personnel after they noticed the suspicious act in the early hours of July 2. A case has been registered at Barke Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
Accused caught after dramatic chase
The arrested accused has been identified as Tilak Raj, a native of Kolathamajalu Kolakere in Bantwal taluk who is currently residing in Urwa.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 4.20 am on July 2, when Tilak Raj allegedly threw a suspicious parcel towards the prison’s kitchen area.
The act was noticed by KSISF RPC Kiran, who immediately alerted ASI Kiran Ambig. Acting swiftly, the security personnel chased the accused for nearly 500 metres before successfully apprehending him.
The accused was subsequently produced before the jail’s supervising officer, Police Inspector Subhash, in whose presence he reportedly confessed to the offence.
Parcel contained ganja and smoking materials
Preliminary investigation revealed that the parcel allegedly contained ganja, along with a lighter and rolling papers intended to be delivered inside the prison.
Police said a man identified as Kiran, a resident of Moodushedde, had allegedly handed over the contraband and related items to Tilak Raj with instructions to throw them into the jail premises.
Investigators further revealed that Tilak Raj was allegedly paid ₹2,000 to carry out the task.
Inmate allegedly directed the delivery
According to the investigation, the accused was also provided with the mobile number of an inmate identified as Loy Vegas, who allegedly instructed him to throw the narcotics at a specific location inside the prison premises.
Police suspect the incident was part of a planned attempt to smuggle narcotic substances into the jail and are investigating the involvement of others linked to the operation.
Investigation underway
A case has been registered at Barke Police Station under relevant provisions of the law.
Police are continuing their investigation to identify the individuals involved in the alleged smuggling network and to determine whether similar attempts had been made in the past. Officials are also examining the role of the alleged supplier and the inmate named during the preliminary inquiry.
The authorities said further investigation is in progress to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy behind the attempted smuggling of ganja into the district jail.
