Puttur: Puttur town police have registered a case against an individual for allegedly circulating a provocative and false message on WhatsApp that could disturb public peace and order.
According to police, a person using a WhatsApp account under the name ‘Manjunath’ allegedly circulated an inflammatory message using the name of a political party.
Fake message calls for bandh
The message reportedly called for a ‘Puttur Bandh’ on August 26 and was allegedly intended to create tension and disturb public harmony.
Police took serious note of the message and initiated action after it came to their attention. The circulation of unverified and provocative information on social media platforms can create confusion among residents and potentially lead to law-and-order concerns.
FIR registered under BNS
Puttur town police have registered an FIR against the user of the WhatsApp account. The case has been registered as Crime No. 103/2026 under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Police are investigating the source and circulation of the message and are expected to gather further information regarding the account and the person responsible for the alleged post.
Authorities have repeatedly urged social media users to verify information before forwarding messages, particularly when such messages concern protests, shutdowns or other matters that could affect public order.
