Mangaluru: A 37-year-old man died after he was allegedly attacked with a broken beer bottle by his nephew following a dispute during a family religious function at Pilatabettu in Bantwal taluk on Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as Madhusoodan, while the accused, Rahul, has been taken into police custody.
The incident occurred after an argument reportedly broke out between the uncle and nephew during a religious gathering attended by several family members.
Dispute erupted during family gathering
According to a complaint filed by Shekhar Praya, 43, a resident of Pilatabettu, a religious programme was being held at his residence on the night of May 31. Several relatives and family members had gathered to participate in the event.
During the function, Madhusoodan allegedly got into an argument with Rahul, the son of his brother Keshava, over a work-related matter. The disagreement reportedly escalated, leading to a heated exchange between the two.
Family members present at the venue are said to have intervened, following which Rahul allegedly left the programme in anger.
Alleged attack after programme
After the religious function concluded, family members reportedly heard shouting near the house. Concerned by the commotion, Shekhar Praya rushed to the spot to find out what had happened.
It was then alleged that Rahul had attacked Madhusoodan using a beer bottle and inflicted a severe injury to his neck during the confrontation.
Madhusoodan sustained serious injuries in the incident and was immediately shifted to the Government Hospital in Bantwal for emergency treatment.
However, doctors who examined him declared him dead upon arrival.
Police register murder case
Based on the complaint, the Punjalkatte Police have registered a case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which pertains to murder.
Police officials have taken Rahul into custody and are currently questioning him in connection with the incident. Investigators are also collecting statements from family members and other witnesses who were present during the religious programme.
Authorities are examining the sequence of events that led to the fatal attack and whether the assault was premeditated or occurred in the heat of the moment following the dispute.
Investigation under way
The incident has shocked residents of the area, as the tragedy unfolded during what was meant to be a peaceful family and religious gathering.
Police have launched a detailed investigation and are expected to gather further evidence, including witness testimonies, as part of the probe.
Officials said further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. The accused remains in custody while inquiries continue.
