Mangaluru: A man attempted suicide by jumping into the river from the Netravathi Bridge, which has long been identified as a vulnerable suicide point. The incident occurred just days after a portion of the bridge’s protective railing was damaged in a vehicle accident and remained unrepaired.

The man, a resident of the Pumpwell–Naguri area, reportedly leapt into the river on Sunday. Fishermen who were engaged in fishing beneath the bridge immediately noticed the incident and acted without delay. Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, they jumped into the river, pulled him into their boat, and brought him to safety.

After administering first aid, the fishermen shifted him to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Hospital sources said the man was conscious when admitted and is currently under medical observation.

Rescue operation by alert fishermen

Eyewitnesses said the fishermen were stationed directly below the bridge when they saw the man climb over the railing and jump. Within moments, they manoeuvred their boat towards the spot and dived into the water to rescue him.

The rescuers have been identified as Jamal, Idinabba, and Maiyadi. Local residents have praised their swift and courageous action, stating that their timely intervention prevented a tragic outcome.

Fishermen in the area said they are often on alert while working under the bridge, as it has witnessed several such incidents in the past. They added that immediate response is crucial in preventing loss of life, especially given the depth and current of the river.

Damaged barricade raises safety concerns

The incident has once again drawn attention to safety concerns surrounding the bridge. It may be recalled that the protective barricade installed on the structure was damaged in a recent vehicle accident. Despite spending lakhs of rupees on constructing and installing the barricade to deter suicide attempts, the damaged section has not yet been repaired by the concerned authorities.

Fishermen suspect that the man may have taken advantage of the broken portion of the railing to gain easier access to the edge before jumping. Residents of nearby areas have expressed concern that the delay in repairing the barricade could lead to further such incidents.

Social activists have repeatedly urged authorities to strengthen preventive measures at identified suicide-prone locations. Suggestions have included installation of higher protective railings, round-the-clock surveillance cameras, emergency helpline boards, and periodic patrols.

Call for urgent repairs and preventive steps

Following Sunday’s incident, locals have renewed their demand for immediate repairs to the damaged section of the barricade. They have also called for a comprehensive review of safety measures on the bridge to prevent misuse.

Officials from the concerned department are yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the repair timeline. However, residents argue that swift action is essential, particularly given the bridge’s history as a vulnerable spot.

Meanwhile, the rescued man continues to receive medical care. Authorities are expected to counsel him and inform his family members. Police sources said appropriate follow-up procedures are being carried out.

The incident underscores the importance of community vigilance and timely infrastructure maintenance. While the bravery of the fishermen ensured that a life was saved on Sunday, residents hope that preventive measures and prompt repairs will reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
