Mangaluru: A man who had allegedly been evading arrest for nearly six years in connection with multiple criminal cases has been arrested by personnel of the Mangaluru Women’s police station and produced before the court. The accused has been identified as Mohammed Imran, 36, a resident of Gurupura Ulaibettu.

Accused arrested after prolonged search

According to police, a warrant had been pending against Imran in Case No. 10/2020 registered at the Mangaluru Women’s Police Station under Sections 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

A corresponding C C No. 2225/2021 was also pending before the competent court. Despite the warrant, Imran had reportedly remained absconding for nearly six years.

Personnel of the Mangaluru Women’s police station eventually traced him and took him into custody. Following his arrest, he was produced before the court for further legal proceedings.

The court subsequently remanded Imran to judicial custody until August 24.

Warrants pending in other cases

Police said Imran is also wanted in connection with other cases registered at different police stations.

A warrant is pending against him in Case No. 16/2020 of the Puttur Women’s police station. The case has been registered under Sections 342 and 363 of the IPC and Section 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Another warrant is pending in Crime No. 149/2012 of the Kankanady Town police station. The case was registered under Sections 384 and 34 of the IPC.

The multiple warrants indicate that police had been seeking the accused in connection with cases registered over different periods.

Court remands accused to custody

After completing the arrest formalities, Mangaluru Women’s police station personnel produced Imran before the court.

The court ordered that he be remanded to judicial custody until August 24. Further proceedings will be carried out in accordance with the warrants and cases pending against him.

Police are continuing legal procedures in connection with the other cases in which Imran is reportedly wanted.

Police pursue pending cases

The arrest brings an end to the period during which Imran had allegedly remained out of the reach of investigators in the 2020 case registered by the Mangaluru Women’s police station.

The police action also allows authorities to proceed with the pending warrants and related court proceedings in the cases registered at Puttur Women’s police station and Kankanady Town police station.

The latest arrest highlights the efforts of police personnel to trace accused persons against whom warrants remain pending for extended periods. Further legal action will now depend on the proceedings before the respective courts and the status of the cases against the accused.
