Mangaluru: The Commission for Bible, Diocese of Mangalore, organised a special study and discussion session for priests on July 30 at the Lecture Hall of St Joseph’s Seminary, Jeppu, with the aim of strengthening biblical knowledge and enhancing the preaching ministry of the clergy.

The programme, titled “Preaching the Parables: An In-depth Study of Selected Parables from the Synoptics,” was held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and brought together priests from across the Diocese of Mangalore for an enriching day of scriptural reflection, learning and pastoral dialogue.

Seminar focuses on understanding Jesus’ parables

The resource person for the seminar was Rev. Dr. Sunil Ranjar, SJ, of the Pontifical Biblical Institute (Biblicum), Rome. Drawing from his expertise in biblical studies, he explained the literary, theological and pastoral significance of Jesus’ parables found in the Synoptic Gospels.

The session began with an introduction to the nature of parables and the various methods used to interpret them. Dr Ranjar then presented a detailed study of two important Gospel passages—the Parable of the Sower and the Parable of the Unjust Steward—highlighting their message and relevance for today’s preaching ministry.

Priests engage in meaningful discussions

The programme encouraged active participation through discussions and interactive sessions. Priests raised questions, shared pastoral experiences and reflected on practical ways of communicating the teachings of Jesus more effectively in their ministries.

Participants described the seminar as intellectually enriching and pastorally relevant, appreciating the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Scripture and strengthen their preaching.

Rev. Dr. Vincent Sequeira, Diocesan Secretary for the Commission for Bible, welcomed the gathering, introduced the resource person and delivered the vote of thanks. He expressed gratitude to St Joseph’s Seminary for hosting the programme and thanked all the priests for their participation, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to promoting ongoing biblical formation in the Diocese of Mangalore.

Bishop Emeritus and 48 priests attend

The seminar was attended by Most Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop Emeritus, along with 48 priests from across the Diocese of Mangalore.

The organisers also acknowledged the support of Rev. Dr. Rajesh Rosario, Rector; Rev. Fr. Vincent Menezes, Administrator of Jeppu Seminary; Rev. Fr. Rohith D’Costa, Director of Mangala Jyothi (DBCLC); Rev. Dr. Alexander K.J., President of Theology; Rev. Dr. Milton Jacob, Dean of Studies (Theology); Rev. Dr. Ivan D’Souza, Dean of Studies (Philosophy); and the seminary staff for their contribution to the successful organisation of the event.
