Mangalore University, amidst conducting end-semester exams, is prioritizing the evaluation of final-year students to aid those seeking higher education or entering the job market. While exams are ongoing for second, fourth, and sixth-semester students, the university’s focus is on expediting the evaluation for final-year students.
During a meeting with college principals on Monday, university officials announced that the evaluation of sixth-semester exam papers would commence first, with results expected to be released promptly. H. Devendrappa, Registrar (Evaluation) at Mangalore University, stated that the evaluation process would begin in the third week of July. “We are focusing only on sixth-semester candidates to provide them with results at the earliest, enabling them to seize future opportunities,” said Devendrappa. However, he acknowledged the challenges involved, given the substantial number of students and answer scripts to be processed.
The university has approximately 22,000 sixth-semester students, each with a minimum of five subject papers, amounting to roughly 110,000 answer scripts. The coding process, essential for evaluation, is labor-intensive and requires a significant number of staff. Despite the challenges, Devendrappa expressed optimism that a smooth initial phase would facilitate a quicker overall evaluation process.
The evaluation department has identified four centers for this process: University College, Hampankatta; Besant Women’s College; and two other city colleges. There are no plans to shift the evaluation center to Konaje due to feasibility concerns. However, some teaching faculty expressed dissatisfaction with the early evaluation for sixth-semester papers, citing impracticality and the necessity for subject-specific faculty involvement.
