Mangaluru: A 28-year-old married truck driver from Boliyar near Mudipu lost his life in a tragic road accident in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra on February 23.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Rizwan, son of B.H. Kareem and a resident of Boliyar. He had been working for several years as a driver of a fish-transport truck under a private logistics company operating between coastal Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Fatal collision during fish transport trip

According to police sources, the accident occurred when Rizwan was transporting a consignment of fish to Ratnagiri. His truck reportedly collided with another heavy vehicle, resulting in a severe crash.

Preliminary information indicates that the impact of the collision was intense, causing extensive damage to the front portion of the truck. Rizwan sustained grievous injuries and was declared dead at the scene. Local police and emergency responders reached the spot shortly after the incident and initiated necessary procedures.

The exact cause of the accident is yet to be officially confirmed. Authorities are examining whether factors such as driver fatigue, road conditions or mechanical failure may have contributed to the collision. A case has been registered at the jurisdictional police station in Ratnagiri, and further investigation is under way.

Community mourns young breadwinner

Rizwan’s untimely death has cast a pall of gloom over Boliyar and surrounding areas near Mudipu. Family members and neighbours described him as a hardworking individual who had been supporting his family through long-distance truck driving for several years.

He is survived by his parents, wife, a two-year-old child, three brothers and three sisters. Being one of the primary earning members of the family, his sudden demise has left the household in deep distress.

Residents of Boliyar expressed shock at the tragedy, noting the risks faced by truck drivers who frequently travel long distances carrying perishable goods such as fish. The coastal belt of Karnataka has a thriving seafood trade, and many drivers undertake overnight journeys to Maharashtra and other states to ensure timely delivery.

Risks faced by long-distance drivers

Transporting fish consignments often requires strict adherence to delivery schedules to maintain freshness, leading drivers to travel extended hours. Road safety experts have repeatedly highlighted the dangers associated with fatigue and continuous driving, particularly on highways connecting Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Accidents involving heavy vehicles are not uncommon on national and state highways, especially in hilly stretches and areas with sharp curves. While authorities have taken measures to improve highway infrastructure, incidents continue to underline the need for enhanced road safety awareness and stricter compliance with rest regulations for commercial drivers.

Police officials in Ratnagiri have stated that post-mortem formalities were completed and the body will be handed over to the family for final rites. Further details regarding the circumstances of the collision are expected after completion of the investigation.

Call for improved safety measures

The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the vulnerabilities faced by drivers engaged in inter-state goods transport. Local community members have urged transport companies to ensure adequate rest breaks, regular vehicle maintenance and adherence to safety protocols to prevent similar accidents.

As the family prepares to lay Mohammed Rizwan to rest, relatives and well-wishers have called for support during this difficult time. The loss of a young life at the age of 28 has left an irreplaceable void for his family and the community.

Authorities have appealed to motorists, particularly heavy vehicle operators, to exercise caution and follow traffic regulations strictly to avoid further tragedies on highways.
