Mangaluru: The BJP celebrated the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) victory in all four Karnataka Legislative Council elections for graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies at the party’s district office in Kodialbail, Mangaluru, on Wednesday, October 28.
Party leaders and workers marked the victory by bursting firecrackers, distributing sweets and raising slogans in support of the BJP and the NDA. The celebrations followed the announcement of the election results on October 27, in which the BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance won all four seats, leaving the ruling Congress without a win.
The results were seen as a setback for the Congress, which had sought to retain its existing representation and make gains in the elections.
BJP leaders participate in celebrations
Several BJP leaders and party functionaries took part in the celebrations at the district party office. Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, Bharath Raj Shetty, Kishore Kumar, Monappa Bhandary and former corporators were among those present.
BJP Dakshina Kannada district president Satish Kumpala and Mangaluru MP Captain Brijesh Chowta also addressed the gathering.
Party workers expressed their enthusiasm over the alliance’s performance, with the celebrations reflecting the BJP’s response to the results in the state’s graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies.
The victory across all four seats provided an occasion for local party leaders to rally workers and highlight the NDA’s electoral performance.
NDA wins all four Legislative Council seats
The BJP-JD(S) alliance won the Bengaluru Teachers’, North-East Teachers’, West Graduates’ and South-East Graduates’ constituencies. The results were announced on October 27, following polling held on October 23.
JD(S) candidate A P Ranganath defeated Congress veteran Puttanna in the Bengaluru Teachers’ constituency by a margin of 908 votes.
BJP candidates secured the remaining three seats. Shashil G Namoshi won the North-East Teachers’ constituency, S V Sankanur emerged victorious in the West Graduates’ constituency, and K M Suresh won the South-East Graduates’ constituency.
The sweep gave the NDA all four seats contested in these constituencies, while the Congress failed to win any of them.
The outcome highlighted the alliance’s performance among the electorate comprising graduates and teachers, whose constituencies form part of the Karnataka Legislative Council.
Setback for Congress ahead of future elections
The results represent a setback for the ruling Congress, which had hoped to retain its existing seat and improve its position in the Council elections.
For the BJP and JD(S), the victory provides a boost to their alliance in Karnataka as the state’s political parties prepare for the 2028 Assembly elections.
The results are likely to figure prominently in the political debate over the performance of the ruling party and the opposition’s prospects. However, the Legislative Council elections involved specific graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies, and their outcome does not by itself determine the results of future Assembly elections.
In Dakshina Kannada, the celebrations at the Kodialbail office brought party leaders and workers together to mark the alliance’s performance. The participation of district-level leaders and elected representatives underlined the importance the local BJP unit attached to the results.
The NDA’s victory across all four seats has given the alliance a reason to celebrate, while the Congress faces the task of assessing its performance in the constituencies.
