Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is set to establish a crematorium and incinerator for deceased animals at the Nandigudda Crematorium. This initiative, proposed by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, aims to provide a dedicated facility for the environmentally safe disposal of animal carcasses.
Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur has directed the council to allocate land and install an incinerator to address the long-standing demand from animal lovers and pet owners. The proposal is currently under review by the council’s standing committee, and funding for the project will be included in the upcoming budget.
Corporator Shailesh B. Shetty of Attavar Ward has stated that around 20 cents of land will initially be allocated for this purpose. The MCC Council Chief Whip, Premanand Shetty, confirmed that the proposal is being thoroughly discussed, and a survey has been conducted. The chosen site for the animal crematorium will be situated separately from the human crematorium to avoid any potential conflicts.
The District Prani Daya Sangha, represented by member Kateel Dinesh Pai, highlighted that the Animal Welfare Board of India had urged all urban local bodies to establish such facilities. Pai expressed optimism that the initiative will be prioritized and positively impact the community.
