Mangaluru: A total of 35,160 pending traffic violation cases were cleared in Mangaluru under the Karnataka government’s 50% traffic fine concession scheme, with motorists paying penalties amounting to Rs 92.43 lakh, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said.

The concession scheme, introduced by the state government, was in force from June 21 to July 10, allowing vehicle owners to pay only half of the pending traffic fines. During the period, the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate conducted a special drive to encourage motorists to clear long-pending traffic violations.

Over 35,000 pending cases settled

Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said motorists availed themselves of the concession by paying fines either through online platforms or by visiting police stations across the city.

As a result, 35,160 pending traffic violation cases were disposed of after motorists paid a total of Rs 92,43,400 in penalties. Following the payment, the cases were officially closed.

Police said the response to the scheme was encouraging, with thousands of motorists taking the opportunity to clear their pending violations within the concession period.

The initiative not only helped motorists reduce their financial burden but also enabled the police to clear a significant backlog of pending traffic cases.

AI cameras detected majority of violations

Of the total cases settled, 18,792 were violations detected through AI-enabled traffic surveillance cameras installed at various locations across the city.

The remaining 16,368 cases involved traffic offences detected directly by police officers and traffic personnel while on duty.

The AI-based traffic monitoring system has been playing an increasingly important role in identifying violations such as signal jumping, helmet violations, seat belt offences and other breaches of traffic regulations, complementing manual enforcement by police personnel.

Officials said the combination of technology-based monitoring and field enforcement has strengthened traffic regulation across Mangaluru.

Police continue road safety enforcement

Apart from clearing pending cases, the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate has continued strict enforcement against motorists involved in serious traffic offences and road accidents.

As part of a separate road safety initiative, action has been initiated against 224 drivers involved in major accident cases and serious traffic violations during 2026.

The driving licences (DLs) of these motorists have been seized, and proposals have been submitted to the respective Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) recommending suspension of their licences.

According to Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, the action is intended to improve road safety by discouraging reckless and dangerous driving behaviour.

137 licences already suspended

Police said 137 driving licences have already been suspended following recommendations made to the RTO authorities.

The remaining cases are currently under process, and suspension orders are expected after the necessary scrutiny by the transport department.

Officials stated that licence suspension is being pursued in cases involving serious violations and accident-related offences as part of efforts to ensure greater accountability among motorists.

The commissionerate has reiterated that strict enforcement of traffic laws, combined with public awareness and technology-driven monitoring, remains a priority to reduce road accidents and improve traffic discipline in Mangaluru.

The police have also urged motorists to follow traffic rules, avoid repeated violations and drive responsibly to ensure safer roads for all road users.
