Mangaluru: A 24-year-old youth, Jumar from Kanchinadka, Bantwal taluk, has been sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment for stalking and harassing a minor girl. The verdict, delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge, FTSC-I (POCSO), D Vinay, marks the first conviction under Section 78 of BNS in a stalking case.

Special Public Prosecutor Sahana Devi Boloor stated that the court delivered the judgment within four months of the case being registered on October 15, 2024. With family support, she eventually filed a complaint at Venoor police station.

Following the investigation by Sub Inspector Shrishail D Muragod, the chargesheet was submitted, leading to the court’s conviction. Jumar was ordered to serve one year in prison and pay a fine of ₹10,000. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional two months of imprisonment. Additionally, the court directed ₹1 lakh compensation to be provided to the minor victim.

The case, registered under Section 78 of BNS and Section 12 of the POCSO Act, highlights the swift judicial response to stalking crimes.
