Mangaluru: In response to a notification from the Central Road Transport and Highways Ministry, the Mangalore district police have launched a crackdown on speeding vehicles. This operation, which began on Monday, has already led to numerous cases being registered.
The police have deployed five “Mobile Speed Detection Radar Guns” capable of measuring vehicle speeds from up to 100 meters away. The initiative covers the Police Commissionerate’s jurisdiction, including Mangaluru city, where over 10 cases have been recorded so far.
On the first day, Bantwala traffic police utilized a new radar gun camera on Highway 75, leading to 62 speeding cases and the collection of ₹65,000 in fines.
This effort is part of a broader strategy to address speeding, which is reported to be a factor in 99% of accidents. Fines will be assessed according to the maximum speed limits of various roads.
However, the public has raised concerns about the fairness of these fines, noting that many speed limit signs are either damaged or obscured by dirt, making it challenging to adhere to posted limits. There are questions about the appropriateness of issuing fines under such conditions.
