Mangaluru: Deputy commissioner (DC) Darshan H V has instructed officials to ensure that relief and compensation under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act be sanctioned without delay in all registered cases.

Relief measures under the Act

Chairing the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee and the Nomadic Development Corporation Committee meetings at his office on Monday, the DC emphasised the need for swift response in atrocity cases. He noted that compensation had already been sanctioned in all cases filed under the Act in the district.

From January 1 to September 15, 2025, a total of 42 atrocity cases were registered. Of these, charge sheets have been filed in 22 cases, and Rs 34.10 lakh has been disbursed as compensation, informed Hemalatha, deputy director of the social welfare department.

Focus on effective prosecution

The DC further instructed officials to ensure effective prosecution of pending cases in court and to take all necessary legal steps to secure conviction of the guilty. He stressed that strict enforcement of the law was crucial to providing justice to victims and maintaining public confidence.

The meeting was attended by zilla panchayat CEO Narwade Vinayak Karbari, superintendent of police Arun K, deputy commissioner of police Mithun, Mangaluru sub-divisional officer Meenakshi Arya and other senior officials.
