Mangaluru: Evolve A Women Entrepreneur Association marked its 4th anniversary with the grand launch of Hidden Gems 2024, an initiative to honour outstanding women entrepreneurs in Mangaluru. The event, held at Ajantha Business Centre, Bejai, celebrated the intersection of entrepreneurship, empowerment, and social responsibility.
A day of celebration and recognition
The ceremony commenced at 10 AM with a welcome address by the association’s president, Ms. Raksha Bhat, who highlighted the achievements of Evolve and its members over the past four years. The event was hosted by Ms. Deepthi Prabhu, the association’s joint secretary, whose engaging emceeing set the tone for the day.
The event was graced by two distinguished guests. Dr. Deepak Shedde, a renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist, attended as the chief guest, underlining the association’s commitment to women’s health and menstrual hygiene. Joining him was Mr. Walter D’Souza Nandalike, founder of Daijiworld Group of Media and a noted entrepreneur, journalist, and actor, whose presence added a special flair to the celebrations.
Honouring Ms. Prameela Rao: A champion of menstrual hygiene
A key highlight of the event was the recognition of Ms. Prameela Rao, Honorary Managing Trustee of Kalpa Trust (R), for her tireless efforts in promoting menstrual hygiene and empowering women. Past and present office bearers of Evolve presented Ms. Rao with a cheque raised through member contributions.
In her acceptance speech, Ms. Rao expressed heartfelt gratitude for the honour and support from Evolve members. She spoke passionately about breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation and improving access to hygiene resources, especially in rural communities.
About Ms. Prameela Rao: A dedicated social activist
Ms. Prameela Rao is a noted educator and social activist with a career dedicated to the empowerment of marginalised communities. An Assistant Professor at Canara First Grade College, she is currently on deputation to Government First Grade College, Kavoor. As the Honorary Managing Trustee of Kalpa Trust, her work spans menstrual hygiene, education, and advocacy for indigenous tribes.
Her contributions include:
- Kalpa Trust: Touching the lives of over 25,000 people in 21 villages across Karnataka and Kerala through education and health initiatives.
- Documentaries and awareness campaigns: Featured in Padwoman and Meet Mangalore’s Padwoman, shedding light on menstrual health issues.
- Innovative research: Leading projects like the BIRAC-funded initiative to develop disease-indicator adult diapers for elderly care.
- Support for special communities: Advocacy for Endosulfan victims and rehabilitation of Malekudiya tribes in Karnataka.

The event concluded with the launch of Hidden Gems 2024, an initiative that aims to identify and celebrate exceptional women entrepreneurs. By fostering recognition and support for women-led ventures, Evolve continues its mission of driving empowerment and social change.
