Mangaluru: In an age where birthday parties are often marked by balloons, plastic decorations, and sugary cakes, one family in Mangaluru chose to celebrate differently—honouring health, sustainability, and mindful living.
On July 5, Reshma and Lakshmikant celebrated the first birthday of their daughter Kshirsha and the tenth birthday of their son Moksha at Lions Ashoka Seva Bhavana in Kadri. But instead of the usual party fare, the parents embraced an eco-conscious and meaningful celebration curated by environmentalist Jayaprakash Ekkur.
“There was no cake, no plastic, and no sugary treats,” said Jayaprakash. Instead, the highlight was a touching ritual where 16 children each dropped a healthy item—ranging from fruits and seeds to dry fruits and greens—into a large bowl. This symbolic gesture of creating a nutritious community offering replaced the traditional cake-cutting. The mix was then shared with all guests, promoting the value of healthy eating from a young age.
The venue was decorated with natural flowers, woven palm fronds, and coconut shells. True to its zero-waste spirit, there were no disposables—no plastic spoons, paper cups, or plates. Drinking water was served in traditional tumblers, and every aspect of the event reflected conscious planning.
This thoughtful celebration inspired many attendees and showcased how birthdays can be joyful, impactful, and kind to the Earth—all at once.
