Ganesh and Rohini, whose 50-year-old house collapsed during heavy rainfall in August 2024, have moved into a newly built home, “Keshava Sadana,” in Vivek Nagara, Mangaluru. The 600-sqft house, constructed in just four months at a cost of ₹12 lakh, was funded and built on personal land by former mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur under the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).
The family, including their four daughters, narrowly escaped the collapse of their old home and had been left without shelter. True to his promise, Sudheer Shetty ensured the construction of a well-equipped two-bedroom house.
At the housewarming ceremony on Sunday, which coincided with his birthday, Sudheer Shetty expressed his joy in fulfilling the promise. “Helping others is a way to seek God’s blessings. When I learned the family had no proper documents for their old house, I pledged to build them a new one. Today, I am proud to fulfill that promise,” he said. Shetty also announced plans to launch a trust, ‘Aasare,’ to support housing projects for the underprivileged.
Former minister Krishna J Palemar lauded Shetty’s initiative, calling it a model act of social responsibility that all public representatives should emulate. Other dignitaries, including MLA D Vedavyas Kamath and Mayor Manoj Kumar, praised the effort during the event.
This remarkable act of kindness not only provided shelter but also set an inspiring example of community service.
