Mangaluru: Deputy Commissioner Darshan H V has instructed district officials to make advance preparations to tackle possible drinking water shortages and fodder scarcity, stressing that immediate action must be taken if difficulties arise in the coming days.
The direction was issued during a meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on October 31. The meeting reviewed drought preparedness, damage caused by monsoon rains and the impact of a fire accident in Surathkal.
Advance arrangements for drinking water supply
The Deputy Commissioner asked the concerned departments to complete the tendering process in advance so that drinking water could be supplied without delay whenever a requirement arises.
He emphasised that officials should not wait until a shortage becomes severe to begin preparations. Necessary arrangements must be made beforehand to ensure that affected areas receive drinking water promptly.
The administration has also been asked to remain prepared to address fodder shortages for livestock, particularly if drought conditions affect availability in the district.
Schools and anganwadi centres to be inspected
Darshan H V directed officials to inspect anganwadi centres and school buildings and identify structures that require repairs.
He stressed that children’s safety should be given priority and instructed the departments concerned to complete essential repair works without delay.
The inspections are intended to ensure that educational institutions and childcare centres remain safe for children, particularly in the event of adverse weather conditions.
Taluk-level task force meetings every 15 days
The Deputy Commissioner instructed officials to conduct task force committee meetings at the taluk level once every 15 days without fail.
These meetings should review the availability of drinking water, fodder supplies for livestock and other disaster-management concerns. Officials have been asked to assess the situation regularly and take precautionary measures wherever necessary.
He also directed the concerned officers to submit reports detailing the steps taken at the taluk level.
Monsoon damage and Surathkal fire reviewed
The meeting also discussed damage caused by monsoon rains and damage to public property following a fire accident in Surathkal.
The review was part of the district administration’s broader disaster-management preparations, with officials instructed to assess potential risks and ensure that departments are ready to respond to emergencies.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Raju K, Mangaluru Sub-Divisional Officer Meenakshi Arya and senior officials from various departments attended the meeting.
The Deputy Commissioner’s directions underline the need for coordinated planning among departments to address possible water scarcity, protect livestock and ensure the safety of children and public infrastructure.
