The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to rename Mallikatte Park in the city after the late Kadri Gopalnath, the legendary saxophonist. The proposal was approved during an MCC council meeting chaired by Mayor Manoj Kumar.
Kadri Gopalnath, a globally acclaimed saxophonist and Padma Shri awardee, passed away in October 2019. Renowned for his pioneering work in bringing the saxophone to the forefront of Carnatic music, he earned the title “Saxophone Chakravarthy” (Emperor of the Saxophone) for his contributions to the genre.
The suggestion to rename the park was made by MCC council member Shashiraj and received unanimous support from fellow council members. The park, situated centrally in Mangaluru, is a well-loved spot for locals to relax and enjoy recreational activities.
This move seeks to honor Kadri Gopalnath’s immense contribution to Indian classical music. The MCC will soon begin the formal process of renaming the park, which includes obtaining the necessary state government approvals.
Once renamed, the park is expected to become a cultural symbol of Mangaluru, celebrating its rich musical heritage and inspiring future generations of musicians.
