Mangaluru: The city police have registered a case against five nursing students from Kerala for allegedly consuming drugs in a residential locality, raising fresh concerns over substance abuse among students in coastal Karnataka.
Incident near Chilimbi locality
The incident came to light on Tuesday when local authorities received information about a group of youths allegedly consuming ganja near a layout close to Chilimbi Malaraya Daivasthana, within the jurisdiction of the Urwa police limits.
Acting on the tip-off, police personnel reached the spot and found the five individuals engaged in suspicious activity. Upon further inspection and questioning, it was confirmed that they had consumed cannabis. The youths were immediately taken into custody for further inquiry.
Medical tests confirm drug consumption
Following their detention, the suspects were subjected to medical examination, which confirmed the presence of narcotic substances in their system. This evidence formed the basis for registering the case under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act.
Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH stated that the legal process is being followed, and strict action will be taken as per the law. He emphasised that even consumption, not just possession or trafficking, is punishable under the Act.

During interrogation, it was revealed that all five accused are nursing students studying in institutions in the city and were residing in rented accommodations across different locations.
