Inmates at the district prison in Mangaluru have established a small nursery, selling plants as part of a project aimed at promoting self-reliance. Recognizing the agricultural background of several inmates, district prison officer Obleshappa initiated the project to teach them plant cultivation. Sixteen prisoners began by growing decorative plants such as crotons, jasmine, and Royal Palm.

The initiative, encouraged by the deputy commissioner, now involves 30 inmates, with a designated space for plant sales outside the prison. The local community has embraced the effort, and the income generated supports the state.
