Following recent heavy rainfall in the district, residents along the coast in Ullal and surrounding areas have been advised to exercise caution regarding sea erosion. The rough seas pose a significant risk to numerous coastal homes, prompting officials from the Ullal City Municipal Council (CMC), Someshwar Town Municipal Council (TMC), and Kotekar town panchayat to implement safety measures for families residing in these areas.
The absence of permanent solutions has resulted in the coastal stretch from Talapady to Ullal experiencing natural disasters caused by sea erosion for many years. Authorities are working to address the situation and protect the affected communities from further damage.
Speaker UT Khader, who represents the Mangaluru constituency, stated that families affected will be relocated to safer places. He also promised to arrange an alternative site for families if they want to shift from the coast permanently. Since there is no government land available in Ullal CMC limits, families will be given alternative land in rural areas, with all basic facilities provided. “I will personally help them and ensure that they get all facilities,” Khader said.
Stating that many families are reluctant to shift from the coast, the MLA noted that even rural areas have been developing fast. When media persons highlighted the damage to the house of Raveeji, a resident of Battappadi, Khader assured that necessary steps would be taken to assist her. On the lack of permanent solutions to prevent sea erosion in Ullal, Khader mentioned that a retaining wall and a breakwater will be constructed with the help of experts from NITK, Surathkal.
