Mangaluru: The latest issue of Mangaluru Samachara was formally released at the Mangaluru Press Club on Thursday, bringing together journalists, writers, and media professionals for an event that highlighted the evolving role of journalism in society.

The programme featured noted speakers and members of the media fraternity, who reflected on the responsibilities of journalists and the growing intersection of journalism with social service in Dakshina Kannada.

Journalists’ role in shaping society highlighted

Addressing the gathering, senior writer and editor-in-chief of Anupama monthly, Shahnaz M stressed the vital role journalists play in shaping public awareness and reflecting societal realities. She observed that while journalists consistently bring attention to the issues faced by others, their own struggles often remain overlooked.

She emphasised the need for society to acknowledge the pressures, responsibilities, and emotional experiences that journalists navigate in their profession. According to her, recognising these aspects is essential to building a more informed and empathetic society.

Changing dynamics in journalism

Shahnaz M also pointed out a shift in the role of journalists, particularly in Dakshina Kannada. She noted that earlier, journalists largely confined themselves to reporting and editorial duties. However, in recent years, many have expanded their roles beyond the newsroom to actively participate in social service initiatives.

“The work, achievements, and experiences of journalists—both their challenges and successes—should reach the public,” she said. She expressed optimism that publications like Mangaluru Samachara would serve as a bridge between journalists and the wider community, helping readers better understand the profession.

Presence of media representatives

The event was presided over by Muhammad Arif Padubidri, vice president of the Mangaluru Press Club. Key representatives from the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Association were also present, including president Pushparaj B N and general secretary Rajesh Poojary.

The gathering reflected strong participation from the local media community, underlining the importance of such forums in fostering dialogue and collaboration among journalists.

Programme proceedings

The event proceedings were conducted by executive committee member R C Bhat, who compered the programme. General secretary Ibrahim Adkhasthala delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the event on a note of appreciation for all participants and contributors.

Conclusion

The release of the latest issue of Mangaluru Samachara not only marks another milestone for the publication but also serves as a reminder of the evolving and multifaceted role of journalists in today’s society. As media professionals increasingly engage with community issues beyond reporting, such platforms play a crucial role in amplifying their voices and strengthening their connection with the public.
