Mangaluru— The coastal city is preparing to raise its tallest national flag at Bavutagudda, with a 295-foot (approx. 90-metre) flagpole soon to rise above the skyline. The project site has been finalised, tender procedures wrapped up, and construction is expected to commence shortly.
Once completed, this monumental flagpole will be Karnataka’s second tallest, next to Belagavi’s 110-metre structure, and will surpass the existing 75-metre-high flag at Kadri Park.
Historical Significance
The location, Bavutagudda — meaning “flag hill” — holds immense heritage value. It was here that Kedambady Ramayya Gowda, a fearless freedom fighter, led a farmer uprising that briefly ousted British forces, hoisting a revolutionary flag and declaring freedom for 13 days. The permanent national flag installation at this iconic hill aims to honour his legacy.
Project Vision
According to MLC Manjunath Bhandary, the flag will stand next to Ramayya Gowda’s statue at Bavutagudda Park. The initiative comes under the Smart City Mission, following his request to the Urban Development Minister for a permanent national symbol in the region.
The structure will include a full-scale Ashoka Pillar, complete with the four-lion emblem and Ashoka Chakra, enhancing its national and cultural significance.
Strategic Planning
Five locations were evaluated for feasibility — Kadri Park, Bavutagudda, Nehru Maidan, Mangala Stadium, and Circuit House. After soil and wind pattern analysis, Kadri Park and Bavutagudda were chosen. The Smart City board approved both, with Bavutagudda hosting the taller flagpole.
