After two years of anticipation, the Miyawaki forest initiative in Mangaluru district has finally materialized, transforming a barren plot into a thriving ecosystem. Spearheaded by the Biopharmaceutical company Biocon, in collaboration with the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), this project aims to enhance biodiversity and promote ecological balance through the cultivation of native plant species.
Project Overview
Under the guidance of environmentalist Jeeth Milan Roche, renowned for his extensive tree-planting endeavors, the Miyawaki forest project was conceptualized and executed. Spanning a 78-cent plot of land from the Labor Department gate to the Padavu bus stand, the forest serves as a green oasis amidst urban sprawl.
Inspired by Dr. Akira Miyawaki
Inspired by the pioneering work of Dr. Akira Miyawaki, a Japanese plant expert, the project follows his methodology of creating dense forests in limited spaces. The forest, aptly named after Dr. Miyawaki, hosts over 2000 trees, with species indigenous to the Western Ghats region.
Biodiversity and Conservation
The Miyawaki forest boasts a rich array of flora, including endangered species such as wild mango, jackfruit, mahogany, sandalwood, and many more. To nurture these saplings, approximately 8,000 liters of water are provided daily, supplemented by green waste from city apartments used as organic fertilizer.

The establishment of the Miyawaki forest has not only revitalized the landscape but also mitigated environmental concerns. Before its creation, extensive debris clearance was undertaken, signaling a significant transformation in the area’s aesthetics and ecological health.
