Mangaluru: Manipal Hospital has terminated the services of Dr Sharanya following allegations that she spread misinformation against Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) and its products. The hospital management confirmed that disciplinary action was taken after the matter came to light.
According to sources, Dr Sharanya had allegedly made statements about KMF products that were later termed as misleading and defamatory. The remarks reportedly circulated on social media platforms, triggering widespread reactions and prompting complaints.
FIR and defamation suit filed
An FIR has been registered against Dr Sharanya in connection with the alleged dissemination of false information. In addition, a defamation suit seeking damages of ₹25 crore has been filed against her.
Officials associated with Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) stated that the organisation took serious note of the statements, asserting that they were baseless and harmful to the reputation of the cooperative and its widely consumed dairy products.
KMF, a state-level dairy cooperative known for marketing milk and milk products under the ‘Nandini’ brand, supplies products across Karnataka and other States. Representatives maintained that all products undergo stringent quality checks and comply with food safety standards.
Hospital’s response
In a brief statement, Manipal Hospital clarified that it does not endorse personal views expressed by its employees on public platforms when such views are not supported by scientific evidence or institutional policy.
The management stated that the doctor’s alleged actions were in violation of internal professional conduct guidelines, leading to her dismissal. The hospital reiterated its commitment to ethical medical practice and responsible public communication.
Investigation under way
Police have initiated an investigation following the registration of the FIR. Authorities are examining the nature of the statements made, the platforms on which they were shared, and whether they amount to criminal defamation or dissemination of false information.
Legal experts noted that defamation cases involving corporate entities can attract substantial claims for damages if the statements are proven to have caused reputational or financial harm.
The incident has sparked debate on social media regarding professional responsibility, freedom of expression and the need for fact-based communication, particularly when public health and widely used food products are concerned.
Further developments are awaited as the investigation and legal proceedings continue.
