Mangaluru: A massive public meeting has been announced for September 9, led by various Hindu organisations, to protest against what they allege is repeated interference by the police in religious and cultural programmes under the pretext of maintaining law and order.
Decision Taken at Consultative Meeting
The decision was finalised at a consultative meeting held at Balambhat Radhakrishna Hall near Sharavu Temple in Mangaluru. Leaders expressed concerns that not only were certain events obstructed, but in some cases, they were halted midway, allegedly causing distress to participants and organisers.
Organisations and Leaders Involved
The meeting was organised under the banner of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and saw participation from several prominent leaders and artists, including:

Dr M B Puranik, Sharan Pumpwell, H K Purushottam, Shivanand Mendon – VHP leaders
Theatre and Yakshagana artists – Dr Devdas Kapikad, Ln Kishore D Shetty, Vijay Kumar Kodial Bail, Bhojraj Vamanjoor, Satish Shetty Patla
Others – Tamma Laxman Kumar Mallur, Ravi Alevuraya, Krishna Manjeshwar
Representatives from various societies, including Sounds and Lightings Society President Dhanraj and several deity worshippers such as Dayanand Kattal Sir, also took part.
Focus on Rights of Cultural and Religious Expression
Speakers at the consultative meeting stated that programmes linked to traditions and cultural identity must not be unfairly targeted. They stressed the need for cooperation between authorities and organisers to ensure events are conducted smoothly, rather than abruptly disrupted.

The public meeting on September 9 is expected to draw a large turnout, with cultural leaders, activists, and artists pledging their support. The key demands will include policy clarity, assurance of non-interference, and safeguarding of traditional events.
