A massive tree fell on the walking path of the recently renovated Gujjarkere on the evening of July 30, following heavy rains and gusty winds. The area, typically bustling with evening walkers, was deserted due to the inclement weather.

“Had it been any normal day, there would have been some casualties as a lot of people walk in the evening while many sit beneath the tree,” said Nemu Kottari, Secretary of Gujjarkere Tirtha Kere Samrakshana Samithi. The fallen tree also damaged a portion of the tank railing.

Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyasa Kamath visited the site on the evening of July 30 and instructed officials to clear the debris and restore the damaged railings promptly. On the morning of July 31, civic workers began cutting apart the trunk and branches, removing the wood to clear the path. The early morning walkers, who frequent the area, were unable to follow their daily routine due to the obstruction.

Despite the inconvenience, the prompt response from the civic workers ensured the debris was cleared quickly, minimizing disruption. This incident highlights the importance of maintaining and monitoring large trees, especially in public areas, to prevent potential hazards during adverse weather conditions.

Mangaluru’s community is thankful that no one was present at the time, averting what could have been a tragic incident.
