Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) collected Rs 7,20,500 in fines from commercial establishments during a special inspection drive conducted by a team of 100 officials on October 7. The penalties were imposed for violations involving waste segregation, banned plastic, unhygienic conditions and trade licence renewals.

The large-scale inspection was aimed at ensuring that commercial establishments comply with civic regulations and prescribed solid waste management practices. Officials penalised establishments found violating the rules during the drive.

Waste segregation and banned plastic among violations

The MCC imposed fines on commercial establishments for failing to segregate waste as required under solid waste management regulations. Improper waste disposal and failure to follow segregation practices can complicate waste collection and processing.

Establishments were also penalised for using banned plastic products. The use of prohibited plastic items remains a concern for civic authorities because of their environmental impact and the difficulties associated with managing plastic waste.

Other violations identified during the inspection included unhygienic conditions on commercial premises and failure to renew trade licences.

The fines were collected on the spot from establishments found violating the applicable rules. The total amount collected during the October 7 operation stood at Rs 7,20,500.

MCC urges establishments to follow civic rules

Following the inspection drive, the MCC urged owners of commercial establishments to comply strictly with solid waste management regulations and other civic requirements.

The civic body appealed to businesses to ensure proper waste segregation, avoid banned plastic products, maintain hygienic premises and keep their trade licences up to date.

The corporation also called on members of the public to follow prescribed waste management rules and cooperate with civic authorities in maintaining cleanliness across the city.

The inspection drive underscores the MCC’s efforts to enforce civic regulations and encourage responsible waste management practices among businesses. The corporation has urged establishments to follow the rules to avoid penalties during future inspections.
