Ganesh Kulal, a corporator of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), has been selected for the Mangalore Press Club’s annual award for 2024-25 in recognition of his 25 years of selfless service conducting last rites for unclaimed bodies. Kulal, 55, will receive the award, which includes a cash prize of Rs 10,001, a plaque, and a memento, during the Press Club Day celebration on January 26.
The selection committee, headed by Press Club president PB Harish Rai, honored Kulal for his unwavering dedication. “Without discrimination of wealth, age, or background, he has performed the last rites for over 1,500 bodies, accepting no payment for this service. He has transported unclaimed bodies from Wenlock Hospital to crematoriums, considering it a divine duty. Through his work, he has become a brother to many orphans, transcending caste or political boundaries,” Rai said.
Kulal’s compassion was inspired by his father, who also performed last rites, and he started assisting him in childhood. Despite initial opposition at home, Kulal’s mother supported his commitment. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he risked his life to conduct last rites for over 150 bodies, and he also provided aid to migrant workers and the poor during the lockdown. Kulal even established a shelter for the homeless, providing meals to around 30 people for several months.
Despite his humble financial situation, Kulal has remained dedicated to helping the community. Elected as a corporator in 2019, he does not own a house but works tirelessly to provide housing for those in need.
