Mangaluru: In a proactive step to prevent urban flooding during the upcoming monsoon, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a comprehensive plan to desilt rajakaluves (stormwater drains) across the city. The decision comes in response to repeated incidents of artificial flooding in previous years, which caused significant inconvenience and damage in several localities.

Deputy Commissioner (Development) Naresh P Shenoy stated that the desilting work is expected to begin within a week, once the ongoing tender process is finalised. He emphasised that the civic body has already conducted detailed surveys to identify critical areas requiring immediate attention.

₹4 crore desilting project in final stages

According to MCC officials, tenders for various desilting works—estimated at nearly ₹4 crore—are currently in the final stages. Work orders are likely to be issued shortly, enabling contractors to begin operations ahead of the monsoon season.

“We have prepared a detailed action plan to undertake desilting of stormwater drains across the city. Surveys have been completed, and tenders have been invited accordingly. Work will commence soon after the formalities are completed,” Shenoy said.

The initiative aims to improve the flow capacity of drains, remove accumulated silt and debris, and ensure smooth discharge of rainwater during heavy showers.

Additional funds allocated for rain damage repair

MLC Ivan D’Souza said that the state government has released approximately ₹10 crore to address damages caused by last year’s heavy rains and to resume stalled infrastructure works. The funds will be utilised to repair collapsed canals, restore damaged drainage systems, and strengthen vulnerable structures.

He further added that an additional ₹25 crore has been allocated under the Chief Minister’s special scheme to support flood mitigation and drainage improvement works in the city.

Authorities have been directed to complete all rain-related infrastructure projects before the onset of the monsoon, ensuring that residents are not subjected to recurring flooding issues.

Flood-prone areas identified

Several densely populated areas in Mangaluru have been identified as flood-prone due to inadequate or clogged stormwater drainage systems. Localities such as Malemar, Nekkila, Kottara Chowki, Kodialbail, Kodialguthu, Mahaveer Circle, Padil, and Jappinamogaru have witnessed severe waterlogging during heavy rains in the past.

Officials noted that the lack of proper drainage and the accumulation of silt in existing rajakaluves have been major contributors to artificial flooding in these regions. The upcoming desilting drive is expected to significantly reduce such risks.

Focus on timely execution

MCC authorities have stressed the importance of completing the desilting work within the stipulated timeframe. With the monsoon season approaching, timely execution will be critical in ensuring the effectiveness of the flood prevention measures.

Regular monitoring and supervision mechanisms are also expected to be put in place to ensure quality work and avoid delays.

Conclusion

The MCC’s decision to undertake large-scale desilting reflects a focused effort to address long-standing urban flooding challenges in Mangaluru. With substantial funds allocated and a clear action plan in place, the success of the initiative will largely depend on timely implementation and sustained maintenance.

If executed effectively, the project could provide much-needed relief to residents in flood-prone areas and improve the city’s overall preparedness for the monsoon.
