The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has warned all commercial establishments in the city that their trade licenses will be cancelled if they do not comply with the rule requiring 60% of the language on signboards to be in Kannada. MCC Commissioner Anand CL stated in a release that it is mandatory for all commercial or industrial units, business establishments, trusts, consultation centers, hospitals, laboratories, recreation centers, and restaurants to ensure that 60% of the language on signboards is in Kannada.

“The MCC has been issuing trade licenses to traders on the condition that their signboards must have 60% of their content in Kannada. As a follow-up, we have been verifying adherence to this rule when issuing new licenses or renewing existing ones. We have noticed that many traders are not adhering to the government’s policy related to the use of Kannada on signboards,” the commissioner noted.

The city corporation has also received several complaints from the public about industries using only English on signboards. The commissioner insisted that all commercial establishments and others follow the state’s policy on the use of Kannada. “Trade licenses of those who violate the rules will be cancelled without exception,” he warned.
