Mangaluru: A 17-year-old girl who was pregnant was found dead at her residence in Surathkal on June 23, prompting police to register a case against a youth under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other relevant sections of law.

The deceased girl’s identity has been withheld in accordance with legal provisions protecting minors and victims in sensitive cases. The accused has been identified as Aneesh Poojary, who is currently absconding.

According to police sources, the incident occurred at around 4 pm on June 23. Following the discovery of the girl’s death, her parents approached the Surathkal police station at around 11 pm and lodged a formal complaint, alleging that the accused was responsible for the circumstances that led to their daughter’s death.

Note left behind by victim under investigation

Police sources said the minor had left behind a note addressed to her parents before her death. In the note, she reportedly expressed regret over her situation and made certain allegations against the accused.

Investigators are examining the contents of the note as part of the ongoing inquiry. Officials have not disclosed its complete contents, citing the sensitive nature of the case and the need to protect the integrity of the investigation.

The police have also refrained from revealing additional personal details about the victim in compliance with legal guidelines governing cases involving minors.

Parents allege exploitation under false promise of marriage

In their complaint, the girl’s parents stated that their daughter had informed them that she had been in a relationship with the accused and that she became pregnant during this period. They further alleged that the accused had made assurances of marriage, which later did not materialise.

Based on the complaint, the Surathkal police registered a First Information Report (FIR) in the early hours of June 24 under provisions of the POCSO Act and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Officials said the investigation is being conducted with utmost sensitivity considering the involvement of a minor and the serious nature of the allegations.

Forensic examination underway

The post-mortem examination has been completed, and medical authorities have collected samples for forensic analysis as part of the investigation. Police said the evidence gathered would help establish the facts surrounding the case.

A dedicated team has been formed to trace the accused, who remains absconding. Search operations are underway, and police officials expressed confidence that he would be apprehended soon.

Police continue probe

Senior police officers said all aspects of the case are being thoroughly investigated and that statements from family members and other individuals connected to the matter are being recorded.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the importance of timely intervention, support systems for vulnerable individuals, and strict enforcement of laws aimed at protecting minors from exploitation.

Police have appealed to the public not to speculate on the case or circulate unverified information on social media, as the investigation is still in progress.
