Uppinangady: Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council Kishor Kumar Puttur inaugurated the house construction work for a new permanent home for Smt Bhagi, a resident of Kajekkar in Uppinangady, by performing the traditional Bhoomi Pooja. The initiative was taken up by the Uppinangady Public Sri Ganeshotsava Committee to support the family, which had been living under severe hardship in an unsafe makeshift shelter covered with tarpaulin sheets.

The humanitarian gesture was widely appreciated by local residents, community leaders, and public representatives, who described it as a powerful example of community-driven social responsibility. The initiative aims to provide Smt Bhagi and her family with a safe, dignified, and permanent home, restoring stability to their daily lives.

Compassionate response to long-standing hardship

For several years, Smt Bhagi’s family had been struggling to cope with unsafe living conditions, particularly during monsoon seasons when temporary shelters become highly vulnerable. Recognising the risks and hardships faced by the family, the Uppinangady Public Sri Ganeshotsava Committee resolved to step in and construct a permanent house using community support and collective effort.

The initiative goes beyond the committee’s traditional role of organising religious and cultural celebrations, reflecting a broader commitment to social welfare and humanitarian values. Local residents noted that such interventions play a crucial role in addressing urgent needs that often fall outside the immediate reach of formal welfare schemes.

‘A house is the foundation of life’

Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the construction work, MLC Kishor Kumar Puttur emphasised the deeper meaning of housing for economically weaker sections of society.

“For economically weaker sections, a house is not merely a structure made of bricks and cement. It represents dignity, safety, and stability in life. It is heartening to see public organisations stepping forward with such humanitarian initiatives beyond government schemes,” he said.

He congratulated the Uppinangady Public Sri Ganeshotsava Committee for its sincere efforts to ensure a secure and respectable life for Smt Bhagi and her family. He added that community-driven actions of this nature strengthen social bonds and contribute significantly to inclusive development.

Community initiatives strengthen social fabric

The MLC observed that while government schemes and policies play an important role in addressing housing needs, grassroots initiatives led by community organisations have a unique impact. Such efforts, he said, respond swiftly to real-life situations and foster a sense of shared responsibility among citizens.

He urged other cultural, religious, and social organisations to draw inspiration from the Ganeshotsava Committee’s initiative and extend similar support to families in distress. According to him, sustained community participation is essential for building a compassionate and resilient society.

Dignitaries and local leaders present

The programme was attended by several dignitaries and community leaders, including former MLA Sri Sanjeeva Matandur, Puttur City BJP Mandal President Sri Shiva Kumar, and Puttur Rural BJP Mandal President Sri Dayananda Ujiremar. Members of the Uppinangady Public Sri Ganeshotsava Committee, party leaders, and local residents were also present in large numbers.

Speakers at the event praised the committee for translating social concern into concrete action and reiterated the importance of collective efforts in addressing issues such as housing insecurity and poverty.

Beyond festivals: a model of social responsibility

The Uppinangady Public Sri Ganeshotsava Committee has traditionally been associated with organising Ganeshotsava celebrations and related cultural programmes. However, initiatives such as this housing project highlight how community organisations can evolve into platforms for broader social engagement.

Residents remarked that providing a permanent home not only improves physical living conditions but also restores confidence and hope to families facing adversity. For Smt Bhagi’s family, the new house symbolises a fresh beginning after years of uncertainty.

A message of dignity and inclusion

The Bhoomi Pooja ceremony concluded with prayers for the successful completion of the house and the well-being of the beneficiary family. The event sent out a strong message on the importance of dignity, inclusion, and compassion in community life.

As Uppinangady continues to grow, initiatives like this stand as reminders that social progress is most meaningful when it reaches the most vulnerable. The housing project has been hailed as a model of how cultural organisations can play a transformative role in addressing humanitarian needs at the grassroots level.
